Using Spotlights in Theater Productions
Spotlights are a staple in theater productions and have numerous uses. They’re directional and can focus on a subject, highlighting it in the darkness.
They’re often paired with a coloured filter to draw attention to specific characters and elements. Followspots are ellipsoidal spotlights that can be tracked by an operator to illuminate actors as they move around the stage.
Cyclorama Lights
Cyclorama lights are specialized stage lighting fixtures designed to illuminate cycloramas—the large, curved backdrops used in theatrical productions to create immersive sceneries that complement the narrative. These lights work to create a consistent wash of color over the entire surface of the cyclorama, eliminating shadows and making the stage appear more seamless and cohesive to the audience.
Cyc lights are typically a single or multi-color fixture that uses a special reflector to distribute light evenly over the entire cyclorama. These fixtures are typically made using a Fresnel lens, named after the inventor of that type of lighting fixture, and they can be found in one-, two-, three-, or four “cell” units that can be installed overhead or free standing on the floor.
The CYC is usually painted white or blue in order to make the lighting more effective, though you can use any color that works for the show. Some shows may require a very subtle stage light manufacturer cyclorama effect, while others might call for a more dramatic one.

Followspots
Followspots are powerful manually operated spotlights that track actors as they move on stage. They are often used for musicals or other large-scale presentations where highlighting specific mobile performers is critical. Spotlights can be located in a number of different locations around the theater space, including upstage and downstage positions, and on catwalks. In some theatres, they are also located in purpose-built “spot booths” in addition to the main control room.
A typical follow spot has a powerful light source, often a high-intensity discharge lamp, a set of mechanical dimming shutters called a dowser (for controlling the size of the beam), and a color boomerang with gel slots to allow the operator to change colors easily during a show. They also have a special feature known as frost which can be engaged or disengaged to soften the edge of the beam.
The follow spot operator is a very important part of the team, and their job is to highlight the actor in a powerful circle of light. They must be able to track the actor’s movements precisely, and they must be able to adjust their focus quickly. This requires a highly-skilled and experienced operator to be able to deliver the powerful visual impact that the followspot can add to any performance. The SM (or assistant SM on larger productions) will call the cues for the followspot, but the operator is responsible for making sure that all the details of the cue are executed correctly.
Spotlights

Stage Lighting
Stage lighting adds a layer of visual flair to any theater performance. It can set a specific mood, enhance performances and even influence the audience’s emotions. Using light to shape a theater scene is an art form in itself.
A wide variety of lights are available for stage lighting, ranging from PAR cans and Fresnels to moving lights and followspots. Each type offers different functionality. For instance, ERS (also known as profile lanterns) offer metal shutters in the lens to shape the beam of light, helping you avoid any obstacles or areas that should not be illuminated when designing a specific look. They also have gates in the focal plane, which you can slide gobos or patterns into, to project a particular design onto the surface of the beam.
Besides front lighting, which is designed to accentuate performers’ faces and body models, stage designers use side lighting, back lighting and uplights. LED uplights are a popular choice because of their ability to emit a bright wash, while back lights can be positioned at various angles vertically and can be changed in color.
The type of color used on the stage is another important factor that helps convey a specific message to the audience. For example, a light displaying soft, warm hues during a happy moment in a play can encourage the right emotional response.
